I was once again talking about this song earlier today and the person I was talking to about Erma Franklin and this song, didn't believe me when I told her Aretha Franklin's older sister Erma recorded this song before Janis Joplin did.
Before Janis Joplin as a part of the Big Brother and the Holding Company recorded "Piece of My Heart," Aretha Franklin's eldest sister Erma Franklin recorded and released the joint a year prior.
Peaking in the top ten on the R&B charts, Erma's rendition would later earn the songstress a Grammy nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance in 1969, though her sister Aretha would go on to win with her classic hit "Chain of Fools."
