Project in the Works: Aretha Franklin Biopic

It is no secret that the Queen of Soul and her team have been hard at work on creating a biopic and theater production about her life. Most recently, news came out about Aretha pursing Halle Berry to possibly play Franklin and having Terrence Howard's word to play Smokey Robinson. However, when asked about the project Halle Berry showed hesitation in entering the project due to her lack of vocal talents.

With that said, several different names have recently been swirling around the project including two of American Idol's season three contestants Fantasia and Jennifer Hudson. Per Franklin's recent conversation to CNN, "Well maybe it could be Fantasia or Jennifer, I don't know we'll see,"  While both women have performed Franklin's hits throughout the years, Fantasia has portrayed Franklin during the short-lived NBC show "American Dreams" which showcased Fantasia belting out the Aretha standard "Respect." While I would like to see both women in the lead role, time will tell if either will star in this highly anticipated biopic. In the meantime, check out Fantasia's take on the Franklin classic "Respect" as well as Jennifer's which is lifted from "The Kennedy Center Honors' The Mark Twain Prize honoring Tina Fey."
