Second Listen: "Watching Me" (Jill Scott)
As we are amidst a hyper-visible moment in American history when it comes to race relations, fifteen years ago, Jill Scott spotlighted some of the issues that have continued to face America with her powerful introspective song "Watching Me."
Including lyrics referencing "drugs coming into my community, dirty cops in my community, and you keep saying that I'm free," Jill Scott was, and continues to be a modern day grio reporting to the larger society what she is seeing within her community.
As we honor the musical and societal impact that Jill Scott's debut album Who Is Jill Scott?: Words & Sounds Vol. 1 has had, I encourage you to revisit "Watching Me" below!
