Project in the Works: Teddy Pendergrass

As Sam Cooke's biopic gets the green light, Teddy Pendergrass' much anticipated biopic slated to star singer/actor Tyrese has been pit on hold until further notice due to a legal battle being waged between Pendergrass' sonn and widow over the control of his estate. While his widow Joan, and son Teddy Pendergrass II have been in legal proceedings since the untimely death of Pendergrass in January 2010 from colon cancer, these circumstances have now impacted the status of the biopic and the project has now been put on hold until issues can be resolved.

Tyrese, who visited Pendergrass before his untimely death stated the following about the R&B/Soul Icon. "He told me himself, ‘I don’t want nobody else in this world to do this movie but you.’ At first it was an opportunity, now it’s a responsibility."

The film's producer Charlie Mack also shares Tyrese's sentiments. "It's kind of a rough time," "It's the role of Tyrese's life,” he says. “It's what Ray did for Jamie [Foxx] and Ali did for Will [Smith]. Teddy wrapped his arms around [Tyrese]. [Pendergrass'] mum and many others said, 'Tyrese needs to play him [Pendergrass].' "

With this halt to production, it should be interesting if Tyrese stays attached to the project of attempts to attach himself to the Sam Cooke biopic as I believe he could be a great fit for that production. As always we will keep you posted on the status of this project.
