Last night I was talking with a new friend about music and he brought up the brilliant José James and how he was gearing up to release another album, this time a tribute to the late Billie Holiday and therefore, I thought it would be nice to revisit one of my favorite covers from the underrated crooner.

With that said, rediscovered José James's involvement in Capitol Studios' 1 Mic 1 Take series where the famed crooner opted to take on the Al Green classic "Simply Beautiful" for his performance in this acoustic guitar led cover.

I am going to see D'Angelo later today on his Second Coming Tour here in Los Angeles at Club Nokia and ahead of his performance, I thought it would be nice to revisit his "first" live album from the limited released recording Live At The Jazz Café, which got a major release back 2013 in the form of Live at the Jazz Café, London: The Complete Show.

While I have the original EP that was recorded on September 14, 1995 gig at the Jazz Café in London, the original only featured six of the eleven joints that were recorded and performed that night and Live at the Jazz Café, London: The Complete Show features the previously unreleased five joints including the  cover of Al Green's "I'm Still in Love with You," which D'Angelo entitled  "I'm Glad You're Mine."

One of the best covers of all time in my opinion has to be Al Green's take on the Bee Gees' "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart." Filled with so much soul and emotion Al Green takes this classic song to another level and create a soulful opus that everyone should have in their record collections.

Al Green is one of the greatest men of soul to ever grace the microphone or the stage and his powerful rendition of the Bee Gees' "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" is one of the greatest covers of all time as many believe it is indeed his original tune.

With that said, during 1972, Al Green offered up a spirited rendition during WNET SOUL! 1972 of "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" and as we continue to enter into 2015, I thought it might be nice to watch his sublime performance below.

Amazing Cover: "Simply Beautiful" (Jennifer Hudson)

Jennifer Hudson is hands down one of the best vocalists recording today and while her last album JHUD didn't make as much of an impact on the charts as her vocal talents deserve, there is no denying the power of her voice.

With that said, earlier this week, CBS aired the telecast of the 37th Annual Kennedy Center Honors and Jennifer Hudson performed a stirring rendition of the Al Green classic "Simply Beautiful" which truly has me wondering why she hasn't recorded a covers album in a similar fashion that Luther Vandross did with Songs.

Maybe it's too early in her career for Jennifer to release a covers album, but her voice is one of a few that can really handle and reinterpret some of the great classic in my opinion and I hope that one day she will.
