Project in the Works: Mahalia Jackson Biopic (Fantasia)
Billboard.com is reporting that Fantasia has been tapped to star in the upcoming Mahalia Jackson biopic which will be based off of the 1993 biography "Got to Tell It: Mahalia Jackson, Queen of Gospel."
Fantasia's previous acting experiences includes portraying Celie in the Broadway version of "The Color Purple", as well as playing herself in the 2006 Lifetime film based off of her autobiography "Life Is Not a Fairy Tale: The Fantasia Barrino Story." Fantasia's big screen debut was believed to be in the upcoming "The Color Purple" movie musical, although the status of that film is currently unknown.
The film, which will star Fantasia will show Jackson's journey from poverty in New Orleans to her rise in gospel music. The film will be directed by Euzhan Palcy and the script has been written by Jim Evering. The as yet to be titled project is scheduled to go into production in April for a December release.
Could this be Fantasia's ticket back to the Kodack theater, but for the Oscars instead of the American Idol finale? Time will tell if this Biopic could bring the Grammy nominated singer Oscar gold. In the meantime, we will keep you posted on the status of Fantasia's film debut as more information becomes available.
